Help Youth in Durham Region!!!!

A great cause has been brought to my attention and I wanted to share it with you :)

I grew up in a town that was basically all houses, little to do for fun and really just not much in regards to anything helpful. The surrounding towns and small cities were basically the same. There seemed to be the belief that my region was perfect so social services (mostly free) were few and far between, especially for youth.

We, in Durham Region, need to do our part to help keep the few services we have open and working to their fullest potential!

The Refuge is a youth organization in Oshawa that supports homeless and street involved youth from all over Durham! Majority of these youth have experience physical and sexual violence, have been kicked out of their homes, are or were Crown Wards and are all not getting what they need to be happy and healthy!

The Refuge is a place for these youth to go to get food, socialize and gain new skills such as self-esteem and teamwork!

On Saturday February 25, 2012 an event is being held by The Refuge to raise money! It is called Coldest Night of the Year. It is a walk in support of homeless youth. With the tag line of “come freeze with us” it really lets you know that while we are safe and warm in our houses there are many youth in Durham who are out in the streets freezing or getting kicked out of warm areas because they have NO WHERE TO GO!

If you would like to participate by volunteering, sponsoring or walk please click on the links below for more information!

I think many of us young people need to stop and think about how close we are to being out on the streets ourselves. I know I am very aware that without the support of my partner and family I would not be able to afford to take care of myself as well as I would like to right now. These youth deserve the same chances we do but The Refuge needs our help!

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you can all consider participating in some way! If you could even post this blog to your Facebook and/or other social media accounts to spread the word that would be awesome!
