Two New Books To Check Out!

First off: I had the flu. That’s what I decided. I didn’t think that the exhaustion and weakness would stick around for this long but it has (almost a week later). Thinking of blogging or doing much of anything has been difficult but I need to tell you all about these two books I ordered from Amazon 🙂

Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity

Stigma analyzes a person’s feelings about himself and his relationship to people whom society calls “normal.”

Psychiatry Disrupted: Theorizing Resistance and Crafting the (R)evolution

There is growing international resistance to the oppressiveness of psychiatry. While previous studies have critiqued psychiatry, Psychiatry Disrupted goes beyond theorizing what is wrong with it to theorizing how we might stop it.

  1. I’ve been meaning to read the Stigma book for a long time- I’ve studied Goffman’s theories a bit in sociology class. Highly relevant to both disability, queer/GLBT, and fat acceptance movements! The other one looks interesting. Another I recommend is “Saving Normal” it’s a critique of the new DSM by a psychiatrist who was involved in writing it as well as predecessors. (Though I’d rather de-construct “normal” than “save” it!)

  2. seems the older we get, the harder it is to get over colds and flues. hope you feel better very soon!

i’m reading the christopher moore book you recommended now. really great book!
